The Law of Attraction: does it really attract?

The Law of Attraction
There is a lot of talk about the law of attraction, positive thinking, and cosmic ordering and whether or not they actually work. Does the law of attraction really work?
Let’s define the Law of Attraction
The law of attraction states that what you think about and believe to be true will become reality. Let’s say that you want a new car. You decide what kind of car and what color. You then begin the process of envisioning yourself in possession of that car to the point that you can actually feel yourself sitting in it and see it sitting in your driveway, at least in your mind.
In Mark 11, Jesus says that we should believe we are already in possession of whatever it is we have asked for and we will receive it. Sounds like the law of attraction, doesn’t it?
What I think is missing.
The part I think is missing here is that you must work toward whatever it is you want. Yes, I think that faith or belief has much to do with your success in the matter. No, I don’t think that new car will fall from the sky for you.
Someone may give you the exact car you were thinking about and I have heard stories to that effect, but if I were you, I would not sit around waiting for it to happen.
I do believe that the law of attraction helps you to attract into your life anything that you believe you can have, you think about getting, and you work toward. Now I will say that it might come much faster using the law of attraction than if you didn’t. If you don’t believe you can really have that new car you will quit working for it long before you get to the point of actually having it.
Do we attract or do we see?
I will tell you honestly that I am not convinced that you attract things and situations into your life as much as you become aware of what was always there, but you did not see it.
Let’s say you wanted a yellow BMW. You love the color yellow and you love BMWs. You have never seen a yellow one and so you go out and buy one. On the way home from the lot you notice three of them exactly like yours. You stop at the mall and out of the thousands of cars there, you count four yellow BMWs.
Did you attract those cars into your life, or are you just noticing them now because you are more aware?
I believe that life is Infinite and the possibilities are Infinite. Those possibilities are around us all the time. There was a book written in the nineteen thirties by David Gross called “Gold in You Backyard”. The idea was that you don’t need to go further than your own backyard to find the opportunities you want.
The law of attraction opens our eyes to what is already there if we will just take notice and do the work required to take advantage of them.
P.S. One of the most widely read books on the Law of Attraction is The Secret. I own it and think it has a lot of good stuff to say if you just remember that you may have to work for what you want.
