I mentioned yesterday that I am reading The Power of Full Engagement. I want to quote something here that I thought was interesting.

“If growth and development take place from the bottom up-from physical to emotional to mental to spiritual- change is powered from the top down. The most compelling source of purpose is spiritual, the energy derived from connection to deeply held values and a purpose beyond one’s self-interest. Purpose creates a destination.”

Your growth and development start at the physical level and works its way up to the spiritual. This is how a baby grows. You learn and develop from the ground up, so to speak.

If you want change, however, you must begin with the spiritual motivation to do so and then work your way down. Understand that spiritual here does not necessarily mean religion, but a sense of the inner self and a sense of connection to something larger than the immediate self.

I believe this is so true; I wanted to reiterate it here. No change ever happened for me while trying to make it happen from a mental or physical level. Only when I began to find the reasons for change from a spiritual level did things start to happen.

If you truly want your life to improve, you have to see it and want it from somewhere deep inside before it will happen. Do you have that deep down desire to change? Do you have a spiritual need to be better?

    A quote from Mengzi (Mencius):

    “One must work at it, but do not aim at it directly. Let the heart not forget, but do not help it grow. Do not be like a man from Song. Among the people of the state of Song there was one who, concerned lest his grain not grow, pulled on it. Wearily he returned home, and said to his family, ‘Today I am worn out. I helped the grain to grow.’ His son rushed out and looked at it. The grain was withered.”

    This quote is regarding the idea of “qi” which is life force or spirit. And I believe it is saying the same thing as you Steve. If you focus on it and try to make it change it will only wither, but if you observe and try to find reasons why for the change then the “qi” will flourish.

    Hi Steve. Great post: “Only when I began to find the reasons for change from a spiritual level did things start to happen.” This is true for me as well. I am 37 now and I have only just started to “get” that so much of my physical world is affected by my spiritual world, the whole mind body spirit connection. “…things happen when we commit more deeply to a spiritual life and practice. … the doors of our soul begin to open and we get a taste of expanded consciousness.” Put into daily practice, this style of conscious living has really helped me in the past few months.
