Goal Setting

Before you read this page, read the Living Your Dreams page. Now that you have your dreams, how are you going to get there? Without some sort of plan, you are most likely going to fail. That’s where goals come in.

Setting goals helps you break up how to get to your dream into do-able chunks! There are quite a few ways to go about this, but I will give you what works for me best.

Set SMART goals. SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Action oriented, Realistic, and Time bound.

Set goals that are specific. Having a goal of “being rich” will get you no where. Having a goal to have an income of $100,000 per year will get you the money. You will know when you get there or that it needs to be adjusted (upward!).

Setting measurable goals help you to know when you get there or where you are in the process. Again, “being rich” is not measurable. What is rich? How much money is that? If you are anything like me, the more you make, the idea of being rich just increases.

Set action oriented goals. “Being rich” doesn’t say how it is going to come about or what you are going to do to get there. “Making $100,000 per year by selling used paper towels” probably won’t make you rich, but you do see that it is action oriented. The goal states exactly what you are going to do to get what you want.

Goals need to be time bound so that you are forced into action. I know you are not lazy like me and that you get right to everything you intend to do, but just in case, make your goals time bound. “Make $100,000 per year by selling used paper towels by January 2010,” gives you a target date to go for. You know that you have to get busy if you are going to make your goal!

You may not be a goal setting type person and might be thinking that you will never carry through with them. My advice is to start small, set small goals and work your way up. Soon you will be going after that $100,000 per year and the used paper towel market will explode!
