Be Yourself- feel free to stand out from the crowd.

Stand out from the crowd

Stand out from the crowd

Is it alright to be yourself? Is it acceptable to feel free to stand out from the crowd? Not only is it alright, it seems it is mandatory. If you refuse to be yourself, you cheat the world of who and what you are.

At bottom every man knows well enough that he is a unique being, only once on this earth; and by no extraordinary chance will such a marvelously picturesque piece of diversity in unity as he is, ever be put together a second time. ~Friedrich Nietzsche

You were born an original. Don’t die a copy. ~John Mason

What if I don’t know who I am?

In some sense, that could be good, but I don’t think it is true for most people. Most of us have some sort of inclination as to who we are, what we stand for, what makes us unique from the crowd. We know, we are just too unsure of ourselves to stand out from that crowd. It takes courage to do so, but when you find that courage, it can be so freeing.

I said that it might be good to not know who you are. The reason I said that is, if you are truly not sure, then the discovery can be a wonderful journey and there is opportunity to build the you that you desire.

You must have control of the authorship of your own destiny. The pen that writes your life story must be held in your own hand. ~Irene C. Kassorla

Many people are not satisfied with who they believe themselves to be. They desire to be more like someone else. Now I am not advocating that you be other than you are, what I am saying is that you have the opportunity to build the characteristics that you desire. You can be more assertive, more productive, happier, whatever it is you like.

Why do I want to risk standing out in the crowd?

Why?

Is life not a hundred times too short for us to stifle ourselves? ~Friedrich Nietzsche

Does that not say it all? Would you prefer to go to the grave regretting an unfulfilled life or knowing that you did all you could, that you were true to your own nature? I know the answer for myself. What is yours?

Certainly there are risks. Some may not accept who you are. Some may criticize you for what you stand for. Do you really care that much? Do you care so much that you would rather be a slave to their wishes than be free in yourself?

Life is short. There are only so many chances to give the world the gift, that’s right, the gift of who and what you are. Why waste a single moment of that time? Why lose sight of the dreams you have, the dreams inspired by Spirit? Why not be yourself and feel free to stand out from the crowd?

Here’s to You!

Life Change: giving up

Have you ever thought of giving up on life? No I don’t really mean

Giving Up

Giving Up

suicide. I don’t mean giving up totally, what I mean is giving up and just letting life happen instead of working at it. I think we all go through those times. Life just gets too much, or it isn’t happening the way you wanted. You feel like it would be easier to just give up; and it would.

The problem for me giving up is then they win. Who are they? Read the rest of this entry »

Afraid to Change: dealing with the fear of criticizm

It is my belief that the greatest fear for people not moving forward in their attempts at a better life, or life change is the fear of criticism. Most people hate being criticized. Having someone tell them they are foolish or stupid is something they have no wish for.

What do you think?

How many times have you attempted something and one of the first thoughts through your head was something like,” what will others think of me?”  Read the rest of this entry »

Life Change: pretend or get drunk

A young friend of mine came over to tell me all about her tgirl medrip to Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health. She was one of my yoga students and is now a certified teacher herself.

She was saying that she had spent a month at this place that has its central focus on physical mental and spiritual health and then returned home and to her job at a bar. The dichotomy of the two places hit her hard. Read the rest of this entry »

Afraid to Succeed?

Are you afraid to succeed? I bet the first thing that went through your mind was that you were not afraid. The thing is, what stops most of us from succeeding is fear. Now that fear isn’t just the cold chill you get when you have a fright, it is bigger than that.

There is a fear of criticism. Being afraid that someone will think you are crazy and say so or that you are foolish wanting to do whatever it is you want. If our parents were negative or belittled what we did, we most likely have a fear of criticism.

There is the fear of failure. We are afraid that we might fail so we never try. Again parents who are condescending can bring on this fear. Maybe it was a teacher or it might have even been a friend. Wherever it came from, fear of failure plagues many.

On the opposite side there is a fear of success. Believe it or not, many people are afraid that they will succeed and they won’t be able to handle it or they will come under one of the first two once they succeed.

There is a fear of poverty. What if you put all your money into some venture and it doesn’t come through and suddenly you have nothing; all your money is gone! What if it gets so bad that you lose your home and you are living on the streets? Fear of poverty stops lots of us.

There are other fears as well, but these are some of the most common.  Are you afraid? Do you have one of those fears mentioned? Once you understand it and realize that you have that fear, it does much to dispel it. Knowing a fear takes away much of its power.

Can You Be Successful?

Let me ask you a real simple question. Can you be successful? Do you have what it takes to be as successful as you would like to be?

The sad truth is, if you answered no, you are not alone. Many people do not believe that they have the ability to be successful. They feel that they have some sort of limitation that hinders them from getting what it is they want.

Well, I hate to be the one to tell you but, you determine your own limitations.  That’s right you determine what your limitations are. You may argue that you have some sort of mental or physical disability. I would tell you that, unless you are so disabled that you cannot read this post, your limitation is far less than you make it out to be. I know of web site designers who are wheelchair bound and need help for many of life’s functions. I know of dyslexic people who have advanced degrees. They had what you possibly do not. They had a burning desire and belief in themselves.

Stephen Hawking, one of the world’s finest physicists has overcome severe handicaps. Are you saying you are worse off? Professor Hawking knows that no matter what his physical condition, he has something to contribute to the world.

You determine your limitations. The next time you decide your life is unsuccessful or that you can’t change and have a better life, remember that. You are deciding what you can and cannot do. No one else, you are deciding.
